The Philosophers Stone Explained

The Philosophers Stone, also known as the Emerald Tablet or the Smaragdine tablet is a mysterious piece of ancient text which was found in a vault below a statue of Hermes in Tyana. It was reported to be in the hands of an ancient skeleton sat upon a golden throne.  The text is said to contain the alchemical secret of how to create ‘prima materia’ (dark matter) and transform it into gold. In other words, how to be as God.

Its antiquity is shrouded in vague whispers, and its origins have been attributed to Hermes the Greek god, who is the inspiration behind the ancient and secretive Hermetic schools. Hermes himself has been associated with both the Greek and Egyptian cultures. He is believed to have incarnated in Egyptian times as Thoth and in Greek times as Hermes—much in the same way The Dalai Lama is believed to be the incarnation of the Buddha Nature.

Irrespective of the origin and antiquity of the text—which fills less than a page, its importance is immense and far-reaching. For this reason, many a philosopher have attempted their own translation. Perhaps the most famous is Sir Isaac Newton, the father of modern-day physics, who discovered amongst other things gravity, and whose equations are used to launch spacecrafts and predict the movement of planets to this day.

The question for us today then, is why did eminent minds such as Newton show such a deep interest in these seemingly incoherent words?

The answer is simple. It’s because the text contains the biggest secret of the universe.

The problem we face now with the text is that whilst many have tried to translate it, there’s not much effort to explain in layman terms for all to understand. As with many of these ancient texts, the writers and translators especially, had to be careful to preserve the work under the noses of churches and other organisations who regularly executed esotericists for heresy.

We don’t have this problem in our time, not to the same extent as the inquisition anyway, so it’s high time to open up the text to our general understanding.

I have used Newtons translation (italics) as the basis for the original text and outlined the meaning behind each section in a way that we can all understand and meditate upon.

Herein lies the most powerful words you will ever comprehend. Let it bring you meaning and joy and an end to your search for truth. There is nothing beyond this but what you choose to do with it.

The Philosophers Stone:

Tis true without lying, certain and most true.

This is the eternal truth, certain in its accuracy and shared with you in absolute truth.

That which is below is like that which is above and that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing.

All the impressions which appear in our physical universe have root and counterpart in the realm of thought. And everything in the realm of thought has its manifestation in the realm of impressions. This is both the process of, and the miracle of creation (experience).  It is the doing of the one life which forms the entirety of existence. As such, the entirety of existence—from the heavens far above to the deepest depths imaginable is but one life.

And as all things have been and arose from one by the mediation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.

And as the totality of the universe, which includes the totality of time, arose from this one thinker, through the separation and transmutation of thoughts (ideas) into myriad impressions, so does all the myriad impressions that is the universe, stem from this one thinker, differing only for the purpose of experience in their form (adaptations).

The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth is its nurse. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.

It is itself the fertility of Mother Nature, it is Mother Nature herself, her Offspring and all the evolution and processes of life. Penetrating all things as both their cause and their effects, it forms the perfection of the entire universe. It is only through the experience of substantiation that it can experience itself as it has known itself in the realm thought. This is the purpose of being.

Separate thou the earth from the fire,

the subtle from the gross

sweetly with great industry.

It ascends from the earth to the heaven

and again it descends to the earth

and receives the force of things superior and inferior.

Endeavor to remember that you are not your body by knowing life through death, and you will ascend to the realm of thought and ideas. Through this experience shall you now live, having the understanding of creation through thought, and by that have command over all the things above and below you.

By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world and thereby all obscurity shall fly from you.

Because you are endowed with mind and can think, you form part (adaptation) of this one life, therefore you can create as it. Through this understanding shall you remember who you really are; the glorious and eternal creator of all the impressions you experience around you.

Its force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing.

Being it, you shall overcome all the limitations you have placed around you through the laws of physics and all the laws of the planes of existence. If you can think it, it can be done. By this did Jesus walk on water, did Buddha vanish and re-appear across the Ganga and did Mohammad heal the sick.

So was the world created.

For this purpose, was the universe created.

From this are and do come admirable adaptations where of the means is here in this.

With this knowledge here of who you are, you are now free to create many a universe and any admirable impression which you desire.

Hence I am called Hermes Trismegist [sic], having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world

Hence, I am called Hermes the thrice great, having shared the secrets of mind, body and spirit with you.

That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished and ended.

This alone is the secret of all creation.

But before you go there’s something else you should know
